Sin: Master It!
"Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." Genesis 4:6-7 NASB
Sin is something every Christian must learn to overcome. Jesus delivered us from sin, but it is up to each of us individually to purpose in our hearts not to let sin rule over our lives. In these last days, now more than ever, Satan is desperately trying to take ahold of as many precious souls as he can. His desire is to entice as many people as he can to keep them from entering God's kingdom.
Like Genesis 4:6-7 says, sin is crouching at the door. In other words, it is waiting for you. It is waiting for you to let your guard down and open up your heart to its deceptive and perilous ways. Satan will stop at nothing. He wants you. He wants to keep you bound up in the shackles of sin. He wants to keep you entangled in things that are not of God's perfect way.
It is up to us to choose to do what that verse in Genesis says and master it. Don't let sin master you; you master it! Romans 12:21 says, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." There is a way to escape the enticement of evil, and that is found by doing what is right according to God's Word. Instead of spouting off at the person who cut in front of you in line at the grocery store, smile and control your flesh. Instead of watching something on tv that contains unwholesome morals, turn it off and turn to the Word of God. Instead of carrying a grudge at someone who hurt your feelings, let it go and treat them with the God kind of love. Overcome sin. Master it. Every opportunity that Satan throws your way to walk out of love, or to walk in fear, or to walk in any kind of sin, overcome it with the goodness of God.
When we do what is right in God's eyes, and walk in His Word, sin won't be able to trip us up like it did Cain. Learn to respond to the enticement of sin with the Word as your weapon. As you do that, you will defeat the devil at every turn. Even though sin has a desire for our hearts, we do not have to let it master us. Through God's great Word, we can master it!
